Doyle Brunson and Jack Binion Assist at the Dedication of Horseshoe Las Vegas

The renovation is complete, and Bally’s no longer exists: Caesars Entertainment executives and poker pros cut the ribbon on the newest horseshoe in their collection, the Las Vegas Strip’s crown gem.

Doyle Brunson, Jack Binion, Jack Effel, vice president of the World Series of Poker, and others participated in Friday’s ceremony. Horseshoe Las Vegas and its sister resort, Paris, will host the WSOP for the second time this summer.

Binion, whose father Benny established the first Horseshoe in 1951, gave a horseshoe he said originated from his family’s property on a plaque.

Together with photographs of Poker Hall of Fame inductees and Main Event champions, which have yet to be put, it will hang and accumulate good fortune in the poker room.

Using past events
Benny hosted the inaugural WSOP at his downtown bar in 1970, and Jack was the tournament’s director for thirty years. Nevertheless, when the casino collapsed in 2004, Harrah’s (which had acquired Caesars in 2005 and adopted its name) purchased Binion’s Horseshoe in order to acquire the WSOP and Horseshoe trademarks. It was resold to MTR Gambling group within days and reopened a month later sans the WSOP and Horseshoe brands.

The rebranding is part of a company-wide plan that has its origins in the World Series of Poker and its original location.

In the last two years, Caesars Entertainment has rebranded nine casinos in Maryland, Illinois, Louisiana, Iowa, and Mississippi as Horseshoes. All of these establishments include WSOP-themed poker rooms, which will shortly host WSOP satellites.

Several of them also include Jack Binion’s steakhouses similar to the one on the Strip.

“The debut of Horseshoe on the Strip represents a major milestone for Caesars Entertainment, the Horseshoe brand, and the whole destination,” said Jason Gregoriec, the property’s general manager, in a news statement. “Not only are we eager for visitors to experience the remodeled resort and its new amenities, but we are also pleased to bring the historic gambling brand to Las Vegas.”

Caesars Entertainment describes its new style as “classic sophistication of the Horseshoe brand with design features including tooled leather, dramatic hues, and the trademark gold horseshoe iconography across the casino floor and public spaces.”

Horseshoe Las Vegas has been operational since December and even held its first WSOP Circuit event in February, although Las Vegas “Grand Openings” are sometimes postponed.

The third cycle
The first hotel tower and casino, which debuted as MGM Grand in 1973, was formerly the world’s biggest hotel and casino. The original tower is identical to what it is now.

In 1980, disaster struck when a fire that began in a deli rapidly spread to the gaming floor and blanketed the hotel with deadly smoke. More than 5,000 people were on the site at the time, and 87 of them perished, largely due to smoke inhalation.

It cost $50 million to reconstruct. It was sold to Bally’s in 1986, and in 1999, Bally’s constructed a companion hotel, Paris. Once Eldorado Resorts, Inc. finalized the acquisition of Caesars Entertainment in 2020, they finally became part of the current ownership.
